If you need help removing unwanted furniture, appliances, junk, or bulky items, Junk Maga LLC offers convenient junk removal and hauling services throughout Philadelphia.
Getting rid of unwanted household items in Philadelphia does not always have to mean paying for a private disposal service. The City of Philadelphia operates **six Sanitation Convenience Centers** where eligible Philadelphia residents can drop off certain household trash, recycling, tires, appliances, mattresses, electronics, and other accepted materials at no charge.
These centers can be especially helpful when you are cleaning out a basement, garage, attic, yard, or storage area and have more waste than you can put out with your regular curbside collection.
What Can Philadelphia Residents Take to Sanitation Convenience Centers?
According to the City of Philadelphia, residents can bring a variety of household materials, including:
Household trash — up to six receptacles or 12 bags. Automotive tires — up to four tires per day. Large appliances and metal household items — up to two per day. Appliances containing refrigerants, such as certain refrigerators and air conditioners. Recyclable materials. Electronic waste, including computers, monitors and televisions. Mattresses and box springs, unwrapped. Yard waste, when properly prepared. Latex or water-based paint, after it has been solidified with an absorbent material. Certain batteries and fluorescent bulbs.
Residents should check the City's current rules before loading their vehicle because there are limits on certain materials and some items are not accepted.

Who Can Use These Free Centers?
The Sanitation Convenience Centers are intended for **Philadelphia residents**. You should bring proof that you live in Philadelphia when visiting. The City also states that vehicles must have a total vehicle weight of **less than 6,000 pounds**.
There are also important restrictions. For example, **construction debris is not accepted** at the sanitation convenience centers, and commercial contractors and vehicles carrying commercial loads cannot use the facilities.
That distinction is important for homeowners who are doing a renovation or construction project. Materials such as construction and demolition debris may need to be taken to a private disposal facility instead.
What About Large Appliances and Bulky Items?
Philadelphia residents have more than one option for large household items. The City offers a residential bulk collection program by appointment for eligible households. Items may include refrigerators, air conditioners, hot water heaters, furniture, large toys, flat-screen TVs and passenger-car tires.
Residents may also take certain large metal household items and appliances to Sanitation Convenience Centers, subject to the City's limits. The current guidance lists a limit of two large metal household items/appliances per day at the centers.
Free Tire Disposal in Philadelphia
Old tires can be difficult to dispose of through normal household trash collection. Philadelphia residents can take up to four automotive tires per visit to a Sanitation Convenience Center.
The City also operates a Tire Round-up Program involving registered community groups that collect illegally dumped tires for neighborhood cleanup efforts.
Residents should not leave unwanted tires on sidewalks, vacant lots or other unauthorized locations. Proper disposal helps reduce illegal dumping, pests, fire hazards and other environmental concerns.
Recycling and Electronic Waste
Sanitation Convenience Centers can also help Philadelphia residents deal with materials that should not simply be thrown into regular trash. The City lists recyclable materials and electronic waste—including computers, monitors and televisions—among accepted materials.
If you are cleaning out your home, consider separating recyclables, electronics, metal, household trash and other materials before loading your vehicle. Sorting your items ahead of time can make the drop-off process easier.
Remember: Not Everything Is Accepted
Although the Sanitation Convenience Centers accept many types of household waste, they are not a general-purpose dumping facility. Construction debris is prohibited, and there are limits on several categories of materials.
Philadelphia also holds separate Household Hazardous Waste collection events for materials that can be toxic, corrosive, flammable or reactive. The City's 2026 schedule includes collection events at several locations throughout Philadelphia.
Before making a trip, residents should check the City's latest information to confirm that their particular items are accepted and to verify operating hours.
